The Honeymoon

by Abby

It was a dream vacation in Cancun. Our room had a beautiful oceanview. Our handtowels were folded every day to look like swans and the end of our toilet paper roll had been intricately folded like a fan.

The food was amazing and an all-you-can-eat buffet was always available. On Carribean night at the buffet, we got giant shrimp. Flan (a favorite dessert of mine) was a part of that buffet every day. Smoothies (virgin daquaries) were free everywhere in the resort (including at the swim up bar). Cabanas were Chris's favorite drink which included banana, orange, pineapple, and cherries. My favorite smoothie was Banana Monkey, containing pineapple, coconut, and banana.

In addition to the buffet, there were three specialty restaraunts. One of them (the Brazillian restaraunt) gave us each 6 different kinds of meat sliced off of a giant skewer one at a time - veal tasted the best in our opinion.

We rode buses into the market places several times. We haggled for souveneers with the Mexican shop owners. We're sure that we got ripped off on several items, but it was a lot of fun.

We also had adventures. We wanted to go to Isla Muheres, a nearby island to Cancun. Instead of going with the tour that our resort offered us, we decided to find our own way there and not have a schedule that we had to follow. So we took a bus as far as it would take us, and started walking towards the port where we could take a ferry to the island. We walked for about 2 hours, and just when we thought we'd never get there, another bus stopped for us and took us right where we needed to be: Puerto Juarez. The ferryboat took us to the island, where he again haggled and bought some nice souveneers.

We also took a taxi to the other end of Isla Muheres where we snorkled. The first time we got into the water, we saw many beautiful fish that didn't seem to mind that we were swimming right above them. Some of them would swim right up to our goggles. We got out of the ocean because we decided we wanted to feed the fish while we snorkled. So Chris put some corn flakes into his pocket, and we got back into the water. As soon as Chris took the corn flakes out of his pockets, hundreds of fish darted towards him! Most of the fish were small, but some of them were about 6 inches long. Chris panicked a little, but once we swam away from the cornflakes he was okay.

Every night our resort offered some kind of entertainment in their theatre. Their shows ranged from celebrety impersonations to scenes from Broadway musicals. Watching the actors was fun, but listening to them was very interesting since they were trying to speak 2 languages (Spanish & English) at the same time!

The beach was great. We swam in the cool ocean a few times. One day we borrowed a boogey board from our resort, and rode the waves. We layed in hammocks and bought one of our own. We haven't found a place to hang it up in our apartment yet, but we'll see what we can do.

We're home now, but we hope that we always have a peaceful honeymoon-like spirit. Even despite our busy schedules, homework, and bills, we know that we can always cast our cares on God, who is our peace.
